Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that it will take legal action against individuals or businesses operating without authorization at Velana International Airport (VIA), including those offering foreign exchange services at inflated rates.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, MACL said that permission to conduct business or provide services at VIA is granted only under specific rules and formal agreements. Only those with valid licenses and signed agreements with MACL are allowed to operate services such as SIM card sales and currency exchange at the airport.
MACL emphasized that all authorized service providers must operate strictly within designated counters or facilities, wear company uniforms or carry identification passes, and must not offer services outside the approved areas.
The company warned that any unauthorized business or service provider identified at the airport will face action under applicable laws and regulations, in coordination with relevant security agencies. MACL will not be held responsible for any losses incurred by such businesses.

The measures are part of MACL’s responsibility to ensure the safety of tourists and airport users, and to maintain service quality at VIA.
The statement follows the arrest of a 20‑year‑old Bangladeshi man who was caught selling dollars without permission at Terminal Two’s drop‑off area. His remand was extended on Tuesday. According to the arrest warrant, he did not have authorization to buy or sell foreign currency, and details about his employer or sponsor were not disclosed.
Black market dollar trading remains active in the Maldives, especially during school holidays when outbound travel surges and demand for foreign currency spikes.
