Former State Minister of Sports Hussain Ismail says Male' City Mayor Adam Azim is widely recognised within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for leading both development efforts and opposition demonstrations.
Speaking at an MDP primary campaign rally held in support of Adam Azim’s bid for the party’s mayoral ticket, Hussain said Azim was elected to serve the needs of the people of Male' and those who come to the capital.
Hussain said a mayor does not necessarily have to hold the government accountable, but as an opposition figure, Azim has a responsibility to do so, and is fulfilling that role by improving conditions in the city.
He added that Azim consistently takes the lead in MDP activities.
“Even if there is a demonstration, Adam Azim is there. He gives us all the support we need to prepare for it. That is why I support him,” Hussain said.

Hussain also criticised former Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim, who is contesting the MDP mayoral primary against Adam Azim.
He said it was difficult to vote for someone who had previously left the party, adding that Adam Azim had remained steadfast in his loyalty to the MDP.
“They kicked us in the face and left, and then returned, and now we have to rub their backs again? No. They have to work with us and earn that trust back,” he said.
