Ex-President Nasheed welcomes move to dismiss CSC President
In a statement of the former President’s office stated that Nasheed believes the decision to be a landmark decision that makes the work place a safer place for women and believes this should send a strong message to people in such positions and others to behave in a morally acceptable manner. “Former President Nasheed recognizes that the President of the Civil Service Commission Mr. Mohamed Fahmy Hassan was dedicated and did help improve the Civil Service and is grateful for such service. However, Nasheed is of the opinion that when a Committee of the Parliament finds that there is credible evidence to show that such an incident took place, then as the President of the biggest Employer of the Country, the Civil Service, he would have to go”, MP Mariya Didi, Spokesperson for President Nasheed said. “President Nasheed finds it regrettable that Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) chose to attack the complainant and defend Mohamed Fahmy, despite the Committee finding him to have acted in a manner unbecoming of a person in his position,” She added. The statement by the office stated that it sincerely thanks the courageous woman who came out and stood up against such discrimination and harassment. Furthermore, it stated that the office thanks the Members of the Parliament who stood up against sexual harassment at the workplace for women. The unprecedented dismissal of a head of an institution in Maldives over sexual harassment yesterday was passed by 38 MPs in favor while 32 voted against. While the Parliament had earlier given 14 days for Fahmy to tender his resignation, Fahmy had sent a letter to the Parliament refusing to resign from his post. Fahmy had vehemently denied the accusations and labeled it as a “blatant lie." Parliament's decision to remove Fahmy came after Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) had said there is not enough evidence to determine whether or not Fahmy had sexually harassed the female employee.
