Don't think government can take action on GMR case: ACC

ACC President Hassan Luthfee made the statement countering the claims made by the Attorney General (AG) Aishath Azima Shakoor that the government is having difficulties in making a decision over the GMR case due to the pending probes of the ACC and the Auditor General in to the matter. “We have concluded our reports (on other cases) and have found corruption which has been submitted to the court. Why can’t the government decide on these matters?” Luthfee questioned. “Hence in reality this is blaming someone else while failing to undertake their own responsibilities. I do not think that a party (government) who cannot take action over our previous findings on inquiries can take action in this (GMR) case,” Luthfee said. Luthfee said that the agreement to award INIA to GMR was by far the biggest alleged corruption case reported to the commission. He said that the delay in completing the investigation had been due to the time taken to summon the relevant people and to gather information. “It is not down to any deliberate delays on our side. The inquiry is being prolonged due to difficulties in completing the probe. There are many things to consider. Hence the inquiry may not be fair without taking these perspectives into account. There should not be any issues when we end our inquiry,” Luthfee said. Luthfee said that the he is unsure as of when the commission would be able to conclude their inquiry and that the commission is working towards finishing the inquiry at the earliest date possible. Luthfee highlighted that the employees of the commission is spending much time in the inquiry in to the case. “We are getting cooperation from all parties in the case. The work is being expedited towards concluding the case by questioning and taking statements of various people,” Luthfee said. He said that the ACC is focusing on three main aspects in its investigation. First aspect is how GMR was awarded the airport and that the commission still needs more time to look in to the matter. In addition he said that the commission is individually looking in to the airport development charge and the fuel concession fee.
