President Yameen faction of PPM has filed a case to the Civil Court requesting to delay the local council elections for two months.
According to sources, a hearing for this case has been scheduled at the Civil Court for tomorrow. Right now the scheduled date for the local council elections is 17th January 2017.
According to the case submitted by PPM, they noted that due to the internal problems of PPM they could not prepare well for the elections and also they highlighted the fact that, PPM is the largest party in Maldives. They also said that they do not have many important documents such as party membership data base and membership list. In addition they said that if the election is held on January 17 the party will face irrecoverable losses.
Previously President Yameen’s faction said that Elections Commission will submit a case asking to delay the elections. Also, Elections Commission extended the deadline to apply for elections as well.
However, as per the constitution local elections cannot be delayed. Even during the meeting of the national advisory committee on local council elections, Elections Commission stated that the election cannot be delayed.
