All candidates agree to move up re-vote to Nov 2
Elections commission had announced that the re-run will be held on November 9 with the second round on November 16. The commission had said it was the earliest possible date in which the polls can be held. During the sit-down held between opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate Abdulla Yamin and Jumhoory Party (JP) candidate Gasim Ibrahim had agreed to elect a new president before the constitutional deadline of November 11. Speaking to reporters after the one and a half hour sit-down, Nasheed said the three candidates had agreed to discuss with the elections commission in moving up the re-vote date. Discussions were also held in relation to the issues in the eligible voters list and ways to resolve them, Nasheed said. "We discussed and agreed to put personal animosity against one another aside and work towards the prosperity of the nation," Nasheed said. Yamin said the most important thing agreed by the candidates during the meeting was to hold discussions with the elections commission to ensure a free and fair elections. If it was possible for the commission, all three candidates are now on the same page on electing a new president before November 11, Yamin said. "We agreed on what the elections commission must do to make its database or the voters' list acceptable to us all," he said. According to Yamin, the agreement reached between the candidates will be proposed to the elections commission on Monday. In addition, the process to validate the re-registration forms of people wishing to vote outside their permanent residence must begin immediately and to ensure that the irregularities in the voters' list are minimized. "All three of us want to make sure that the people's choice through the vote is valid and to avoid going to court over it. Elections commission needs to be weary of that," he said. Gasim also pledged to cooperate with the elections commission to elect a president before November 11. "We all want to give the chance to the new president elect on November 11. That's the only way the people can have stability," Gasim said. The presidential re-run was blocked by police on October 19, plunging the country into fresh political uncertainty. The country has been in turmoil since Nasheed stepped down under controversial circumstances last year. Since stepping don however, Nasheed has maintained that he was ousted in a :coup d etat" orchestrated by his then vice president and current president Mohamed Waheed Hassan backed by rough elements of the security forces. A Commonwealth backed national inquiry, in August quashed his claims by declaring that the power transfer was constitutional and Nasheed had resigned on his on free ill. Nasheed led in the first round of balloting in September, the results of which were annulled by the Supreme Court after the third placed candidate Gasim complained of electoral fraud.
