A speedboat has caught fire and sunk in the lagoon of Alifu Alifu atoll Himandhoo early this morning.
According to an island resident, the speedboat, "Kael Wing", was a speed ferry operating between Feridhoo, Maalhos, Himandhoo, and Male'.
The fire reportedly broke out as the boat was preparing to depart this morning.
Videos circulating on social media show the speedboat engulfed in flames. Witnesses say the fire completely destroyed the vessel before it eventually sank into the lagoon.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Authorities, including the Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), have yet to issue a statement on the incident.
