Man caught robbing store armed with box cutter in 97th arrest

A man has been arrested from Male’ City for robbing a store and brandishing a box cutter in an attempt to flee after he got caught – an arrest that court records show marks his 97th arrest.
The 36-year-old Male’ native was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of intimidation using a sharp-edged weapon.
He was presented before the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Monday.
According to the court order, the man was seen on CCTV camera stealing from a store in Male’. When the security guard went to stop him, he threw away the stolen item and used a box cutter to threaten the guard and attempt to flee the scene.
The police found a box cutter in his possession during his arrest.
The court found there was enough evidence to warrant the suspicion against him, and ordered for him to be held at a custodial jail for 15 days.
But as the 36-year-old told the court that he wishes to hire a lawyer, the court also asked for him to be presented before the court for a review of his remand within five days if he has hired legal representation.
The court order shows that the suspect has an extensive record of prior arrests and detentions, including in theft and drug-related cases.
He has now been arrested for a total of 97 times and detained for a total of 47 times. This includes four arrests in 2015 alone.
