On Monday President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu strongly condemned Israel’s September 9 attack on Qatar, describing it as a grave violation of the nation’s sovereignty and a profound affront to the solidarity of Arab and Islamic nations.
His remarks were delivered at the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit in Doha, convened to address the crisis.
President Muizzu characterized the Israeli airstrike as a crime against humanity and a direct threat to global peace. He praised Qatar’s pivotal role in pursuing a peaceful resolution to the Gaza conflict, emphasizing that their diplomatic efforts deserve significant recognition. He further asserted that Israel’s actions aim to undermine peace initiatives and destabilize regional security.
The President framed the attack on Qatar as part of a broader pattern of Israeli transgressions, including the occupation of Palestinian territories and the obstruction of humanitarian aid to Palestine. He denounced the double standards that allow Israel to evade accountability, stressing that international law must be applied uniformly to all states.
Reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment, President Muizzu pledged continued cooperation with the government and people of Qatar. He called for Israeli leaders to face accountability for alleged war crimes through systematic political, economic, and diplomatic sanctions. Additionally, he urged the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and the West Bank to address the ongoing crisis.
The attack, which Israel claimed targeted Hamas officials in Doha, was reported by Al Jazeera to have occurred near residential areas, resulting in casualties among Qatari civilians. Israel stated the strike focused on Hamas members central to the group’s operations for years, but the proximity to civilian zones has drawn widespread condemnation.
