President links national defense to economic development at MNDF Air Corps launch

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that a strong and capable military is essential for the Maldives to achieve resilient economic development and attract foreign investment.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Air Corps’ first air station in Gan, Addu, on Wednesday, the President outlined his administration’s defense policy and its link to national progress.
“The more military capabilities we have, the more investors will grow,” said President Muizzu, adding that economic strength and development depend on the country’s ability to ensure safety and sovereignty.
The President described the development of the armed forces as a national aspiration and said the government is committed to enhancing the MNDF’s capacity across all branches, including the Air Corps, Coast Guard, and land forces, through the procurement of modern equipment and infrastructure upgrades.
He noted that the opening of the air station marks a major step forward in managing the country’s airspace and defense readiness. The facility will also host a new training center, while existing bases in Girifushi and Maafilaafushi will be upgraded to meet modern standards.

In addition to physical infrastructure, the President highlighted the importance of human development within the military. He confirmed that next year’s budget includes allocations to expand training and capacity-building programs, which he said will benefit both the armed forces and the wider population.
“The success of these initiatives will play an important role in making this country a developed nation that achieves independent development,” he said. “By 2040, this country will certainly be counted among developed nations if it has a strong military force in all areas.”
The President’s remarks align with his administration’s broader national security strategy, which positions defense capability as a foundation for economic stability and investor confidence.
