Azim calls for land and flats to be issued without reapplication to those already qualified

Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim has called on the government to prioritize eligible applicants from the second round of the previous administration’s housing schemes when allocating flats and land under the current Housing for All policy.
In a post on social media platform X, Azim said that government agencies already have the records of those who applied for flats and land under the second round of the Gedhoruveriyaa and Binnveriyaa schemes implemented by the last MDP-led government.
“Therefore, without requiring new forms, I believe eligible applicants should be prioritized under the housing project being implemented by this government,” Azim wrote.
He warned that altering public-benefit policies from one administration to the next could erode public trust, especially when it affects equity and justice.
Azim urged the government to honor the list of eligible candidates released on November 16, 2023, and provide them with land and flats without requiring reapplication.

Under the previous government, land and flats were issued in the first phase of the Gedhoruveriyaa and Binnveriyaa schemes. However, following the change in administration, the new government reopened applications on January 18 and asked all applicants to reapply, a move that has sparked concern among those who had already qualified.
The current Housing for All scheme aims to allocate 7,900 flats and 15,000 plots across 1,250 acres. Land will be distributed in two categories: for city residents and for special priority groups. City residents will receive land in Greater Male’ and Rasmale, while residents of other islands in the city will be allocated plots only from Rasmale.
