A man has been arrested from Dhaalu Airport in Dh. Kuduhuvadhoo as he attempted to smuggle drugs into the island.
Maldives Police Service identified the suspect as a 50-year-old Maldivian from HDh. Neykurendhoo.
According to the Police, he was arrested in a operation carried on Wednesday based on a tip received to Counter Narcotics Intelligence informing of an attempt to smuggle drugs into Kudahuvadhoo via air.
The suspect was stopped and searched during the operation which was a join effort of Kudahuvadhoo Police Station and Counter Narcotics Intelligence which led to the discovery of substances suspected to be drugs inside two empty film cannisters.
The Police added that the suspect has been remanded in custody for 15 days upon presentation before the court.
The case is under further investigation by the Police.
Drugs remain one of the most pertinent social issues in the Maldives and one of the most reported crimes. In this regard, 151 drug-related cases have been reported so far this year alone.
