Road Development Corporation (RDC) Managing Director Ibrahim Nazeem has announced a new road construction concept that does not rely on tar or gravel, describing it as a more environmentally responsive approach suited to community needs.
Speaking on a programme aired on PSM, Ibrahim Nazeem said RDC plans to carry out road development projects across all islands, with designs developed in consultation with island councils and local communities.
He said the need for road development is most evident during the rainy season, noting that several islands have emphasised the importance of improved drainage over paved roads, particularly in areas where sandy roads are preferred.
Nazeem said tourism-focused islands such as Thoddoo, Rasdhoo and Maafushi have requested that existing sandy roads be retained alongside proper drainage systems. He added that a new road construction concept reflecting these requirements has been submitted to, and approved by, the ministry.
The RDC Managing Director said the new approach prioritises environmental sustainability, including road designs that preserve trees along roadways. While underground utility works sometimes require tree removal, he said RDC has committed to planting at least one tree for every tree removed during road construction.
