Ibrahim Hassan, popularly known as Kuda Ibbe, who is contesting for Mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City on the PNC ticket in the upcoming Local Council Elections, said last night that his decision to run is driven by a clear goal: to bring tangible and meaningful development to the people.
Speaking at the launch of the PNC’s campaign in Kulhudhuffushi City, Ibbe said he considers the candidacy a major trust (amanat) placed upon him by the people, and that his foremost responsibility is to safeguard and honor that trust.
“I believe you have entrusted me with an invaluable responsibility. With the help of Almighty Allah, my most important duty is to guide that trust to a safe shore,” he said.
Ibbe emphasized that his candidacy goes beyond party politics, stating that he stands not merely as a representative of the ruling party, but as someone who has long stood alongside the people of the city.
“I stand here tonight not just as the candidate of the ruling party, but as the Kuda Ibbe who has stood shoulder to shoulder with you,” he said.
Addressing a question frequently raised during the early days of the campaign—why he chose to contest the mayoral race—Ibbe said his answer is straightforward: to ensure real development reaches the people.
“Real development is money entering people’s pockets. Real development is increasing the prosperity of citizens. Real development is creating opportunities for people to work while remaining in their own island. Real development is making proper use of the city’s wealth and natural resources so that the benefits are shared equally among all,” he said.
Ibbe also said his decision to contest is motivated by the need to resolve Kulhudhuffushi City’s housing challenges and further strengthen the healthcare system, which he described as the heart of the city. He noted that these improvements are essential to serve the more than 70,000 residents of the Bodu-Thiladhunmathi region.
Expressing concern over the city’s economic direction in recent years, Ibbe said efforts to improve Kulhudhuffushi’s economic self-sufficiency have fallen far short of what is needed. He added that one of his key objectives is to transform Kulhudhuffushi City into a leading commercial hub of the Maldives.
