The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has announced that the long-awaited project to build an Islamic Centre in Kulhudhuffushi City will be awarded within the next two to three days.
Minister Shaheem made the announcement during the Question Time segment of the 10th sitting of the third session of the People’s Majlis for 2025, held on Wednesday. The remarks came in response to questions from Mohamed Dawood, Member of Parliament for Kulhudhuffushi North constituency.
MP Dawood posed three questions to the Minister — regarding the start date for the Islamic Centre project, the management of the Waqf Fund in Kulhudhuffushi, and the progress of ongoing Islamic Civilization Development initiatives.
Responding to the inquiries, Minister Shaheem emphasized the government’s strong commitment to Kulhudhuffushi City, describing it as a key regional hub that attracts residents from across the northern atolls. He highlighted that the establishment of an Islamic Centre in the city has been a long-standing public request.
“Kulhudhuffushi is a central island that people from nearby atolls visit day and night. The government prioritizes establishing a centre that can serve both academic and social purposes,” the Minister said.
“I hope, God willing, that within the next two or three days, the government will award the project to a company,” he added.
Minister Shaheem also revealed that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to construct a Waqf building in Kulhudhuffushi City as part of efforts to decentralize Islamic sector services and strengthen local financial autonomy.
He clarified that revenue generated from Waqf properties in the atolls will remain under the supervision of local councils, ensuring that funds are used directly to support Islamic services within their respective communities.
“The Islamic Ministry will not take the funds from Waqf buildings in the atolls. These funds will stay under the Council’s management, empowering them to sustain and expand Islamic initiatives,” Minister Shaheem said.
