The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed Judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa as the acting Chief Judge of the High Court following the resignation of Judge Mohamed Faisal.
Faisal was selected to lead the High Court in March 2025, after former Chief Judge Hussain Shaheed was elevated to the Supreme Court. However, despite the JSC’s decision, Faisal’s official letter of appointment was never issued.
Eight months later, Faisal has stepped down from the role. The High Court has not disclosed the reason for his resignation. On Thursday, the court announced via social media that Judge Jameel would temporarily oversee the court’s operations.
Judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa was sworn in as a High Court judge on August 3, 2024. He brings over 15 years of judicial experience, having served as Magistrate of L. Dhanbidhoo from 2003 to 2009, and briefly as a Civil Court judge in February 2009.
The High Court currently comprises 12 judges, including Jameel, three women and eight men.
