Duo convicted of killing Udhayyu appeal death penalty with High Court

Two people sentenced to death over the murder of a 17-year-old boy in a gang fight in GA. Maamendhoo back in 2021 have appealed their conviction with the High Court.
Ahmed Udhayyu, 17, was stabbed to death in a gang fight in Maamendhoo on February 8, 2021.
His murder produced charges against four people; three adults and one minor.
The minor was found guilty of murder with intent back in October, and sentenced to 25 years at juvenile detention facility – 18 years and nine months for Udhayyu’s murder and six years and eight months for stabbing Udhayyu’s brother, Firushan Zahir, in the same gang fight.
Firushan sustained stab wounds to his back in the attack but survived.
Those injured in gang violence in G. A. Maamendhoo are transported to the hospital on February 8, 2021.
The three adults were charged as accessories to murder. They are:
Sharaf Rasheed, Bilaihmaage, GA. Maamendhoo
Ahmed Shameem, Rihifarudhaage, GA. Maamendhoo
Mohamed Mazin, Gulfaamge, GA. Maamendhoo
Sharaf was acquitted of the murder charge, while Shameem and Mazin were found guilty.
In September, the Criminal Court issued the death penalty against them after Udhayyu’s parents said they wished the court to apply the principle of Qisas during sentencing.
Both Shameem and Mazin have appealed their conviction with the High Court. However, the court has yet to register the petition.
The High Court is also hearing an appeal filed by the state over Sharaf’s acquittal in the murder charge. While Sharaf was acquitted of the murder charge, he was convicted of involvement in an assault with a sharp-edged weapon, for which he was sentenced to seven years in prison.
