The Maldives has joined the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
COPUOS is the UN body responsible for promoting international cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space.
With its new membership, the Maldives is positioned to contribute to shaping global space governance and to advocate for the application of space science and technology in advancing sustainability and climate resilience, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry noted that COPUOS membership will enable the Maldives to leverage space-derived data to enhance climate monitoring, maritime safety, environmental protection, and disaster preparedness.
Alongside the Maldives, Honduras, Zimbabwe, Malta, The Gambia, and Côte d’Ivoire also joined the committee this year.
