President Muizzu: Every Maldivian Aged 18+ Without Housing to Receive a First Home by Year-End

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that every Maldivian citizen aged 18 and above who does not currently own a home will be guaranteed a "First Home" — either land or an apartment — with official documentation to be provided before the end of this year.
In a televised interview with Public Service Media (PSM), President Muizzu said that solving the housing crisis remains the top priority of his administration. He emphasized that the government is preparing to launch an inclusive housing scheme aligned with his presidential pledge, aimed at ensuring access to housing for every eligible citizen.
Applications for the First Home scheme will be open to all Maldivians aged 18 and above who do not currently own land or housing, including residents and natives of Malé as well as people from other atolls residing in the capital.
“To fulfill my promise, we will open applications to all citizens above 18 — Malé residents, Malé natives, and atoll citizens living in Malé,” President Muizzu said. “Eligible individuals will be guaranteed land or apartments across the entire Malé region, including Rasmale’. They will receive official documentation before the end of the year, God willing.”
The President noted that with this project, no one above 18 would be left without housing. Applicants will be informed of the specific location of their assigned property and may choose from newly reclaimed areas in the Malé region.
Ongoing reclamation and development projects in Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Falhu, North Thilafushi, and Rasmale will support the First Home initiative. President Muizzu revealed that 4,000 apartments have already been allocated for the Malé region, which he believes will significantly ease the area’s housing shortage.
He further stated that housing development will extend to 57 islands across the Maldives, either through contractor financing or government funding.
