The government has announced that the universal health insurance scheme, Aasandha, will now cover prescription glasses purchased from registered private clinics and optical shops across the country, effective 15 January.
The decision aims to alleviate financial burdens for citizens requiring vision correction while ensuring wider availability of essential eye care services.
Eyeglasses, though vital for individuals with visual impairments, can often be costly. Recognising this challenge, the government has taken proactive steps to integrate optical services under Aasandha’s coverage. This follows the successful launch of a free eyeglass service at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in July 2025, which saw high demand, prompting the recent opening of a second outlet in Hulhumale’.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, during public consultations held late last year, engaged directly with citizens on healthcare concerns, including gaps in Aasandha’s reach. Responding to feedback, the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has prioritised expanding the scheme’s benefits, collaborating with stakeholders to implement the new policy seamlessly.
Notably, the subsidy for glasses under Aasandha has doubled from USD 64.85 to USD 129.70 every two years, reflecting the administration’s commitment to affordable healthcare.
NSPA affirmed that regulations for the updated coverage are being finalised with relevant agencies, ensuring transparent and efficient service delivery. The expansion underscores the government’s broader efforts to strengthen social protection and address citizens’ medical needs comprehensively.
