New solar-diesel hybrid system installed in Kamadhoo

The installation of a state-of-the-art solar-diesel hybrid system on Kamadhoo, Baa Atoll has been successfully completed.
The project, a key initiative under the government's Preparing Outer Islands for Sustainable Energy Development (POISD) programme, marks a pivotal step in greening the nation's power grid.
The new system integrates a 198 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) array, with panels installed atop the Kamadhoo School and the Fenaka Corporation Limited Power Station. This renewable infrastructure is complemented by an advanced 160 kW battery energy storage system (BESS), designed to store excess solar energy for use during periods of low sunlight, thereby maximising efficiency and reducing diesel consumption.
This installation on Kamadhoo is a critical component of the administration's broader strategy to generate electricity in an environmentally friendly manner across the Maldives' scattered archipelago. To date, similar solar diesel-battery hybrid systems have been successfully deployed in over 100 islands.
This widespread effort is a central pillar of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision, which aims to ensure that 33 percent of the nation's electricity generation is sourced from renewables by the year 2028.
The overarching goal of the POISD programme is to develop the Maldives' energy sector sustainably by drastically reducing the country's heavy dependence on imported fossil fuels.
By transitioning to hybrid systems, the government is not only aiming to cut the nation’s substantial fuel expenditure but also taking a decisive step toward a more resilient and eco-friendly future.
