"Smoky" Thilafushi will be closed down in the next year and half

Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb claims the waste and garbage issue of Maldives will be resolved in approximately one or one and half year’s time with Thilafushi completely closed down with it.
While speaking at the ceremony of “One Nation Coral Revival Program” Minister Adeeb said the “Green Tax” effective next November، will be mainly used to resolve the wastage issue of Maldives as well as Thilafushi.
“We pledge that the income collected to government through Green Tax will be mainly funded in resolving the smoky island of Thilafushi in properly managing and exterminating wastage and junk، we announce that within a year and half، Thilafushi operations of waste management will be completely closed down” he said.
In addition to this، Adeeb stated that closing and “discarding” Thilafushi is a vast project، and it has to be done in an environment-friendly manner. He had also highlighted the pollution level from Thilafushi exerted to the atmosphere is an internationally talked about topic.
“Tourists traveling from air taxis frequent the question upon seeing the thick smokes from Thilafushi، whether the island has a volcano or not، for which we answer that Maldives does not have any volcanoes but the topic cannot be fully disclosed” Adeeb said.
Furthermore، Adeeb highlighted the environmental issue of wastage increasing and pollution must be tackled from individual citizen’s level and each and everyone has a civic responsibility of properly disposing off waste.
