Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) postponed the mass rally scheduled for late Saturday to hand over tickets for the candidates of Local Council Elections.
Previously, PPM announced that the rally named “Heyvalla” will be the largest political rally ever held with over 500 local elections’ candidates expected to take part.
Secretary General of PPM, Abdulla Khaleel stated that the rally was delayed as the Elections Commission has extended the deadline for candidacy application.
“The rally has been postponed, a date is not decided yet,” said Khaleel.
The Local Council Elections has now been pushed back to April 15. This is the second time that the election was delayed by the Elections Commission.
According to PPM, the grand rally will be inaugurated by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. A total of 20,000 supporters are expected to attend the rally from different islands.
According to PPM, 500 candidates will be put forward by the party itself and will be accompanied by the candidates of the government’s coalition partners, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
