A man from S.Hithadhoo has been sentenced to life imprisonment for using and keeping drugs to deal.
Criminal court sentenced S.Hithadhoo Havaasa, Hassan Anvar for trying to smuggle drugs into S.Hithadhoo 8 years ago. According to evidence submitted against him, police received and intelligence report that he was bringing in drugs from Male’ to Hithadhoo. Police arrested him at the airport and found 8 envelopes with drugs in it in his possession.
Speaking at the trial, Anwar said that he did not know what was in the envelopes and those were given to him by his younger sibling.
The criminal court ruling states that, Anwar was not able to prove that the envelopes does not belong to him and also when the police checked Anwar’s urine he was positive for a narcotic. Hence, in accordance with the relevant anti-drug legislation Anwar was sentenced to prison for life.
