Commission’s media official claimed that though the case had not been officially filed, the investigation had been initiated by HRCM. MDP has alleged that Nasheed was deliberately pepper sprayed by Police while he had been with MDP protesters. A video showing the incident has also been publicized since then. The video shows a police officer reaching out towards Nasheed and pepper spraying in the direction of the former President through the gathered crowd. As soon as the police special operations officer in full riot gear pepper sprays Nasheed, the video shows Nasheed turning away to the opposite direction almost instantaneously. Police, however have refuted the allegations of intentionally pepper spraying Nasheed’s face. Police media official Sub Inspector Hassan Haneef had admitted that during the mayhem when police officers had gone into the gathered protesters to retrieve the police barricades removed by the demonstrators, police had used pepper spray to thwart any imminent attacks by the enraged crowd. But he had stressed that police had not deliberately pepper sprayed Nasheed.
