Over 11,000 new members signed to join ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) this weekend, announced PPM on Sunday.
The party had launched a major campaign on Saturday to seek new members, which was spearheaded by First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim. Under her direction, ministers, government aligned members of parliament and company leaders took to the streets to campaign and gather new names to expand the ruling party.
Lawmaker of Inguraidhoo Constituency, Ibrahim Falaaah, who was active as one of the leading campaigners, declared that the activities were hugely successful and over 11,000 people from capital Male and other islands of Kaafu atoll had signed to PPM.
According to Falaah, the number of official PPM members in the Elections Commission’s register numbers 39,000 while the total amount including membership forms that are yet to be submitted stands at 70,000.
“That such a large number of people joined is proof that the people recognise President Yameen’s service and the development he has brought to this country.”
Falaah added that PPM aims to increase its numbers to 150,000 by the Presidential Elections 2018.
