Official funeral rites followed for former minister Umar Zahir who had passed away on Monday at age 85.
Umar Zahir passed away while being treated in the ICU of Dharumavantha Hospital. He was Covid-19 positive.
He had served the nation for over 50 years. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih decreed the national flag be brought down to half-mast for three days following his passing.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Vice President Faisal Naseem, and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed participated attended his funeral.
Umar Zahir had served as minister in various fields from 1983 to 2008.
Some of the most notable development projects carried out in the Greater Male’ Area such as the land reclamation for Hulhumale’ were carried out under his supervision. He was Home Minister when multi-party system was approved in Maldives.
