Nasheed

The case of the former President Mohamed Nasheed who has been convicted of terrorism and sentenced to 13 years in prison has appealed his case at the Supreme Court.
Talking to the press after presenting their appeal, the former President’s lawyer, Hisaan Hussain said that they appealed the sentenced from the Criminal Court at the Supreme Court today.
Hisaan said that he hopes that President Nasheed would get justice through the legal system as President Yamin has said before.
“As President Yamin repeated keeps saying, we too hope with the case being presented at the Supreme Court, a solution would be given to President Nasheed’s case through the legal system.” Hisaan said.
Lawyer Hisaan said that President Nasheed’s incarceration is attracting immense pressure towards the Maldives from the international community and all the people of the country wants the former president to be set free.
Points presented at the appeal:
• Retracting the terrorism charges against President Nasheed
• Overrule the sentence against President Nasheed by the Criminal Court
• If the Supreme Court deems the arrest of Judge Abdulla a crime, press charges under the new penal code
After presenting the appeal at the court today, lawyer Hisaan requested that President Nasheed be transferred to house arrest. He said that it is something the former president wishes.
While the PG (Prosecutor General’s) Office has now appealed the case of President Nasheed at the Supreme Court, the court has now accepted the case.
