Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) president Mohamed Nasheed has appointed former Kaashidhoo MP Abdullah Jabir as an advisor.
While speaking to opposition-aligned television station Raajje TV on Wednesday night, the business tycoon, who is in self-exile in Sri Lanka at the moment, said that he will be acting as a political advisor to the former president in an effort to stabilise the political sphere in Maldives.
Further, he also revealed that efforts to remove president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom from the post are also underway.
Despite Jabir’s claim about being Nasheed’s advisor, Nasheed has not commented on the matter, nor has he officially confirmed it yet.
Jabir had publicly endorsed president Yameen, and pledged his alliance to the incumbent president during the 2013 election. Allegedly, he even spent huge sums of money during Yameen's bid for presidency.
However, after his assets were frozen over tax evasion, Jabir switched sides and began sympathising with the opposition.
Jabir’s wife, Dhiyana Saeed served as the first female attorney general of the country during Nasheed’s presidency.
