Police have said that they announced that all 79 people arrested in Vaavu Anbaraa had tested positive for drugs, after their urine test reports showed that they had tested positive for drugs.
This comes after former President Mohamed Nasheed, leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), said yesterday that the police announced that all 79 people arrested in Anbaraa had tested positive for drugs without actually having their urine tested.
Police raided picnic island Anbaraa on Friday night, where a group of people had gathered for a party. Police searched 198 people, arrested 79, and confiscated large amounts of drugs including LSD stickers and cannabis, and alcohol.
Chief Inspector of Police Abdulla Shatheeh said during a press briefing on Sunday regarding this operation, “79 people have been arrested, including 59 men, 19 women, and one girl below 18. This also includes one foreigner. All 79 people detained by police have had their urine tested, and have tested positive for drugs.”
Police said that 119 individuals were released at the scene after no drugs were found in their possession or in the items they were carrying.
When the suspects were taken to court for detention period hearings, their lawyer said that only some of them had tested positive for drugs.
