Kulhudhuffushi Opens Design Contest for “Bodu Dhaturu” Monument Honoring Historic Journey

An open call for monument design submissions has been announced in Kulhudhuffushi, centered on the theme of the “Bodu Dhaturu” (Great Journey) , a defining event in Maldivian history that showcased the courage and unity of the people of Kulhudhuffushi and the Northern atolls.
According to the Kulhudhuffushi City Council, designers must follow the guidelines outlined in the official announcement published in the Government Gazette.
The Council stated that the best design will be awarded a cash prize of MVR 30,000, and entries must be submitted by email to [email protected] with 2D and 3D scaled drawings before 12:00 PM on Thursday, November 27, 2025.
Speaking to Thiladhun, Mayor Mohamed Athif said that although a previous open call was held for a monument representing Kulhudhuffushi, no suitable design was received at that time. This year, the opportunity has been reopened with a specific historical theme and an increased prize amount to attract stronger participation.
The Bodu Dhaturu refers to the peaceful journey in 1943 led by Kulhudhuffushi Bodu Mohamed Katheeb, during which citizens from the Northern atolls traveled to Malé to advocate for national unity and the rights of the people — an act remembered as one of the most patriotic movements in Maldivian history.
