B. Kendhoo experienced 38 power outages within the past 24 hours, according to the island council, a continuation of an electricity problem residents say has persisted for more than six years.
Island Council President Ibrahim Abdul Rahman told Sun that power cuts occurred repeatedly across different parts of the island throughout Saturday.
He said Kendhoo’s electricity supply has long been unstable, and criticised the government for repeatedly sending what he described as “brand new used generators” instead of properly resolving the issue.
He noted that such frequent outages can damage household electronics, including air‑conditioners and refrigerators.
“I received information at sunset on Saturday that the compressor of a dive centre had broken,” he added.
Ibrahim said residents are increasingly worried, especially as the issue has dragged on for years.
“It has been more than two years. A new power plant has been built, but the engines have not been replaced or upgraded,” he said.
Kendhoo has a population of around 1,400.
The island previously saw protests last September over intermittent power cuts. At the time, Ibrahim said the problem began after a generator at the Fenaka‑operated powerhouse broke down, prompting the installation of a temporary barge generator.
Several other islands across the Maldives are also facing severe power disruptions. The government has said the main cause is the incomplete operation of Fenaka power plants that supply electricity to the atolls.
