Suspect in 3kg drug seizure requests reduced remand as lawyer says she suffers from anxiety attacks

A young woman arrested with three kilograms of drugs last month has asked the Criminal Court to ease her remand, citing mental‑health issues.
Shaain Ali, 27, of Falak, Lh. Naifaru, and Aishath Maasha Ahmed, 20, of Ihraamge, AA. Feridhoo, were arrested on January 4 after Drug Enforcement and Counter Narcotics Intelligence searched an apartment in Henveiru under a court order. Police recovered more than three kilograms of drugs from the residence.
Both suspects have been repeatedly remanded, most recently for an additional 30 days.
According to the latest remand order, Maasha told the court she suffers from mental‑health problems, including anxiety attacks. Her lawyer requested that her remand be reduced. However, police told the court that doctors had not recommended placing her in any specific facility, according to the detention report.
Earlier court documents state that the apartment where the drugs were found was rented under Maasha’s name. The drugs were discovered in the open, and equipment used to seal the packets was also recovered. The court further noted that Shaain has a prior criminal record.
Police say a growing number of young people are being arrested in connection with drug offences, including involvement in major trafficking networks.
