The People’s Majlis in capital Male
Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) locked the gates of Parliament early Monday, barring lawmakers from entering the chambers.
The session on the opposition lobbied resolution to seek a motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker was previously scheduled to be held Monday. The sitting was later cancelled after the Elections Commission announced by-elections will be held for the constituencies of four lawmakers who have lost their seats, stating that the number of valid signatures are below the required amount to file for impeachment of the speaker.
However, the opposition claims that such a resolution initially signed by the members cannot be cancelled as the last decision regarding the parliament speaker would be taken by the Supreme Court.
Hence, opposition MPs have declared that they will enter the parliament today and that security forces cannot obstruct them from doing so.
