EC authorizes formation of another political party

The Elections Commission (EC) has on Sunday authorized the formation of another political party- the National Reform Party (NRP).
Following the authorization, the party has three months to acquire the required 3,000 members- as per the political parties’ act, which states that political parties will only be formally registered at EC and given permission to hold inaugural assembly after this membership requirement is fulfilled.
While EC made the announcement via twitter, the documents were accepted by Mohamed Didi- Islamic minister during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration. Previously a member of now ruling coalition partner Adhalaath Party, Didi had later defected to Yameen’s Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and had campaigned in his bid for re-election.
The Commission has authorized the formation of a number of new political parties since September’s presidential election, and has even registered one- jailed former Vice President’s Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD).
While ‘Karisma Party Maldives’ is among those proposed, EC on Sunday tweeted that those that had submitted the application has since withdrawn.
The Commission has authorized the formation of two additional parties; Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party and People’s National Congress- the latter belongs to former President Yameen.
With the registration of MTD, the Maldives currently has seven registered political parties, the others are; Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhooree Party (JP), Adhaalath Party (AP), Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
