The Maldives Police Service has urged the public to avoid using heavy vehicles on the roads of Malé due to ongoing flooding caused by persistent heavy rainfall in the region.
Since Saturday evening, heavy rain has affected large parts of the central Maldives, including Malé, prompting the Maldives Meteorological Service to issue an orange alert for the area. The continued downpour has led to significant flooding, causing water to enter homes and disrupt road traffic.
In response, government agencies have mobilized to drain the floodwaters and protect vulnerable areas, including placing sandbags where needed. The Maldives Police Service has issued a statement urging the public not to operate heavy vehicles on the flooded roads until conditions improve and the waters recede. Furthermore, the Police have also appealed to the public to refrain from driving four-wheeled vehicles in Malé unless absolutely necessary.
The Police Service has expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation and assistance in these challenging conditions. They also emphasized that individuals requiring assistance should contact the authorities for help.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast that heavy rain will continue in the Malé region for approximately the next three hours.
Chief Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Heena Waleed, confirmed that government agencies are working collaboratively to ensure the safety and well-being of the public during this difficult period.
