A school teacher has been apprehended from southern Maldives on allegations of showing porn and sexually abusing a group of male students.
The male teacher, who is accused of showing a video containing pornographic content to a group of schoolboys, was reported to the police by the Education Ministry on October 26.
A police spokesperson confirmed on Saturday that a 40-year-old Maldivian male was arrested under a court warrant in connection to the case the next day.
He was remanded in police custody for 30 days when presented before a court, added the spokesperson.
The latest case comes after a teacher was arrested from Hulhumale’ on October 22 on suspicion of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl, during a visit to her home for tuition. The teacher, identified as a 46-year-old Maldivian male, was remanded in police custody for 30 days.
Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Offenders, which declares special provisions to deal with child sex offenders both at investigative and trial stages, prescribes a prison sentence of 15 to 18 years, if the person who carried out the offense holds a position of authority over the victim.
