Members elected to represent broadcasters and other media organisations have been appointed to the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission, in accordance with the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Act.
The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission comprises seven members, three of whom are appointed by Parliament and four elected as stipulated in the Act.
The appointed members are Abdul Azeez Ibrahim and Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed, who will serve as representatives of broadcasters; and Simaha Naseem, along with Husain Sageef, who will serve as representatives of other media sectors.
Although the four members of the Commission are to be elected by the President through an election held among media organisations, the candidates were appointed without an election as no other individuals applied to contest the election scheduled for 11 October.
The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission was established under the new Media and Broadcasting Act to serve as the regulatory authority for the media sector. With the new law, the newly formed Media Commission will assume the responsibilities previously held by the Maldives Media Council and the Maldives Broadcasting Commission.
