Rukuma shifted to a third company, this time to Maldive Gas

Mohamed Abdul Kareem (Rukuma), who had been serving as Feneka Corporation’s deputy managing director, has been shifted to Maldive Gas, in the same capacity.
This marks the third time Rukuma has been shuffled among state-owned companies since the current administration assumed office. He was first appointed to Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) in the capacity of a deputy managing director. At the end of last year’s August, he was shifted to Fenaka, in the same capacity.
State Trade Organization (STO)’s media official, on Tuesday, confirmed that Rukuma was appointed to its subsidiary company, Maldive Gas, as a deputy managing director this week.
The reason behind the shuffle remains unclear.
Rukuma did not respond to calls seeking further details.
Maldive Gas is currently run by Abdulla Mohamed, a former school teacher-turned-politician.
Maldive Gas has been repeatedly hit with allegations of corruption since its inception, with the most recent such case being the unexplained disappearance of an advance payment to import a shipment of gas.
While the company has previously stated it is pursuing legal action to recover the money, it is unclear whether the money has been recovered to date.
Rukuma entered with political scene with Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and has served as a parliamentarian and a Male’ City Council member on the party’s ticket.
He exited the party after his defeat at the MDP parliamentary primaries in 2019. Although he contested the election independently, he lost out to MDP’s candidate.
