Himmafushi Rehabilitation Centre upgrade to begin next month

Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan has announced that a major development project for the Himmafushi Rehabilitation Centre will begin next month.
Speaking at a ceremony held to mark the completion of rehabilitation programme conducted by the Drug Court, Minister Ihusaan said the facility will be able to treat up to 500 people at a time and is expected to meet internationally recognised standards. The project is expected to be completed within 18 months.
The minister said existing rehabilitation facilities, including those in Himmafushi and local centres such as the National Drug Agency setup and Hulhumale’ Halfway House, are not providing adequate treatment and need modernisation.
The minister noted that more than 300 participants have successfully completed the Drug Court treatment programme. He stressed that public attitudes towards recovering drug users need to improve, urging society not to view them negatively.
