According to statistics from Male’ City Council, a total of MVR 60 million in spent annually on disposing waste from the roads of the capital city.
The city council said that if public littering is completely stopped, it would allow the authority to redirect expenditure towards maintaining public venues such as parks and mosques and other public venues clean.
Male’ City Mayor, Adam Azim has requested the public to cooperate with city council employees in their efforts to maintain capital city clean. He highlighted that the relevant authorities collect and discard about 30 tons of waste from the Male’ City’s streets on a daily basis. He also noted the practice of discarding trash on top of electricity distribution boxes and concrete barriers around plants.
Azim had urged the public against littering on the roads, requested to use the public dustbins to discard waste.
As a more stringent measure to stop littering, the city council has been fining culpable parties with MVR 500 while their identities are publicized on social media. The council also highlighted that it has discretion of increasing the fine for repeated offenses.
