STELCO brings in a dozen new gensets to meet rise in power consumption during Ramadan

State Electric Company (STELCO) has begun installing a dozen new generator sets – enough to generate an additional 17 megawatts of power – in the greater Male’ area to meet the expected rise in power consumption during the upcoming month of Ramadan.
A spokesperson from STELCO told Sun on Saturday that the state utility company had brought in 13 gensets, but gave one of the gensets to Fenaka Corporation to fix the frequent power outages in Addu City.
The remaining 12 gensets are being installed in the capital and will generate an additional 17 megawatts of power.
STELCO’s managing director Hussain Fahmy told Sun that the company began developing a new powerhouse in Hulhumale’ on Thursday. He said that the new gensets will be installed there.
Fahmy said that though a daunting task, the company expects to finish installing the gensets in eight days.
He said that with the new gensets, STELCO will have the capacity to meet the expected rise in power consumption during Ramadan.
Ramadan is a month that sees a sharp rise in power consumption. The demand for power is expected to go up further with the current hot weather prevailing across the Maldives.
