The Maldives has taken a significant step towards advancing its aquaculture sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a leading Chinese research institute.
The agreement was signed during the ongoing official visit of Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam to China. The Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), operating under the Ministry of Fisheries, signed the MoU with the Fujian Fisheries Research Institute of the People’s Republic of China. Mohamed Shimal, Director General of the MMRI, signed on behalf of the Maldives.
The primary goal of the MoU is to conduct joint research focused on developing the aquaculture industry in the Maldives through the adoption of modern technologies and environmentally sustainable practices. According to the Fisheries Ministry, the collaboration will focus on improving the sector’s productivity while prioritizing ecological preservation.
Officials noted that the agreement reflects the strong bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and China in the field of marine science and sustainable development. The Ministry described this MoU as a key milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to establish a modern, sustainable aquaculture industry that aligns with global environmental standards.
