The Velana International Airport (VIA) is a cornerstone of transport, tourism and the wider hospitality industry, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed has said. The Minister said the development of the airport is one of the country’s most significant ongoing projects.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the "Koveli" Business Lounge at VIA, Minister Saeed said the airport project is closely linked to the entire Maldivian economy, and is one of the government’s top priorities. Noting that VIA employees are the first to welcome tourists visiting the Maldives, he praised the staff of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) for providing exemplary hospitality to visitors every day.
"Few would argue that there could be any work more important to the Maldivian economy than the VIA development, while the airport underpins our main industry. The efforts you put into the airport’s development, its enhancement and progress, and the hospitality displayed by airport staff reflect a true national service,” the Minister said.
Speaking at the ceremony, MACL’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed highlighted the importance of dedicated services for business-class passengers at an international airport. He said the new business lounge will significantly enhance VIA’s services.
"The VIA lounge was completed in a short time, thanks to the hard work of the contractor, the government, MACL and many others who recognised the importance of this project. A business lounge is essential for large airlines to begin service,” he added.
The Koveli Business Lounge was opened with all the facilities VIP passengers may require. The lounge can accommodate up to 270 passengers at a time. There are separate areas for businessmen and dedicated spaces for children.
The majority of the VIA development project was completed and officially opened on Independence Day this year. The government aims to complete all the unfinished works and bring the entire airport into service during this year's peak tourist season.
