School books required for the new academic year will be fully distributed to schools by January 10, according to the Minister of Education, Dr. Ismail Shafeeu.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Shafeeu stated the distribution work is currently ongoing, with books delivered to over 40 schools so far under the government initiative. In addition to the distribution of academic textbooks, the minister also highlighted that the disbursement of stationary vouchers required for the next academic year is ongoing.
With the school annual break scheduled to begin on the 25th of this month, the minister said the stationary voucher disbursement is targeted for completion before students receive their report cards for this academic year.
The ministry aims to provide all students with their textbooks before the beginning of next academic year.
The minister also provided details about the maintenance work being carried out by the government to innovate and improve the standard of school facilities before the start of the academic term. In this regard, the government has earmarked USD 2.59 million for improvements.
Some of the work slated to be carried out by the ministry under this budget is the installation of air conditioning in every classroom across the nation. The commencement of studies in Shaheed Ali School is also targeted for the beginning of next academic year. Shaheed Ali School is the first school developed by the current administration in Hulhumale’ Phase II.
The first academic term of 2026 is scheduled to begin on January 27. The break for the first term is expected from 24 May – 30 May. The mid-term breaks after the first term concludes is scheduled from 17 July – 01 August. Subsequently, the second term is slated to begin on 02 August with students getting their annual break after the term concludes, from 18 December – 12 January.
Accordingly, the ensuing academic year will begin on 17 January 2027.
