As the holy month of Ramadan begins, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has reported a significant influx of perishable food imports, with chicken eggs topping the list of the most-cleared items during the first two days.
According to MPL’s latest data, a total of 3,260 tonnes of goods—comprising 167 consignments—were imported and cleared on the second day of Ramadan alone. Among the perishable food items, 3,658 cases of chicken eggs were processed, marking the highest volume cleared. Onions followed closely with 2,165 sacks, while tomatoes, potatoes, and pineapples also saw substantial imports, with 1,224 sacks, 926 sacks, and 792 sacks respectively.
Other key perishables included 600 sacks of watermelons, 224 stalks of bananas, 556 sacks of cabbage, 170 sacks of melons, and 122 sacks of pumpkins, highlighting the heightened demand for fresh produce during the fasting period.
To ensure smooth operations, MPL has implemented several measures, including the establishment of a dedicated 3,000-square-foot shed in Male’ to expedite the clearance of perishable goods.
Ramadan traditionally sees a surge in food imports and with MPL’s enhanced logistical efforts, traders and consumers can expect uninterrupted access to essential goods throughout the month.
