AI advancement must prioritise public service delivery

The advancement of artificial intelligence should be measured by its ability to enhance public services for ordinary citizens, Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Ali Ihusaan has stated.
Speaking at the "Global Dialogue on AI Governance" in Geneva, Switzerland, Minister Ihusaan emphasised that AI development should not be restricted to the most powerful nations or entities. He called on technologically advanced countries to ensure that AI systems are shaped to be inclusive, accessible, and beneficial to all.
The success of AI is not defined by the sophistication of the systems themselves, but by the quality of service provided to the public, the Minister stated. He argued that for nations like the Maldives, bridging the gap between urban centers and remote islands is a primary challenge that AI is uniquely positioned to address.
Outlining the nation’s digital transformation strategy, the Minister introduced the "Maldives 2.0" initiative, which aims to revolutionize service delivery through AI. He underscored that this transition is being built upon the core pillars of data integrity and security, robust cybersecurity frameworks, and a responsible, transparent governance system.
Minister Ihusaan noted that without AI, ensuring equitable access to government services remains difficult for an archipelagic nation. To facilitate this transition, the Maldives has already completed its first AI Readiness Assessment in collaboration with UNESCO and has established a dedicated Maldives AI Lab.
Sharing the Maldives' experience on the global stage, the Minister highlighted three critical areas where international focus is required. He urged countries to move beyond merely investing in applications and instead invest in building the core infrastructure of the sector. Furthermore, he emphasized the need for the sustainable development of human resources within the AI field, alongside establishing integrated data systems that allow information to be shared seamlessly across all sectors.
Concluding his address, Minister Ihusaan reaffirmed that while the Maldives may be a small nation in terms of geographic size and population, it remains a staunch advocate for inclusive AI policies that protect the rights and interests of all people globally.
