No translator stalls Russian drug dealer's case

Prutova Angelina, 25 was arrested by Maldivian authorities after more than two kilograms of cocaine were discovered from her hand luggage as she arrived in the Maldives from Sao Paulo, Brazil on February 27. The prosecution had lodged drug smuggling charges against her in May. But Haveeru understands that the Criminal Court had rejected the case after it was found that she had no translator assigned to her. The prosecution had not re-filed the charges as they had been unable to assign a translator to her, Haveeru learned. Haveeru also learned that her remand had been extended by the Criminal Court on Monday, but for only two days. The court had reportedly said that it was the responsibility of the prosecution to assign a translator to her. However, the procedure on criminal trials stipulates that a translator should be assigned by the court. No funds have been allocated from the prosecutor general’s budget to assign translators to foreign suspects. Angelina, a makeup artist, has also been alleged with distributing cocaine to many countries by association with a large drug trafficking network in Europe. Her family and friends had been looking for her on Facebook and other social networks since she had been arrested, as this was her first trip to the Maldives and she had then gone out of connections. The punishment for people who smuggle drugs into the Maldives is a life sentence with vast amounts as fines.
