Judge Hameed's corruption case files 'destroyed in coffee spill'

The prosecutor general's office had last month forwarded a case to the Criminal Court where judge Hameed had transferred credit worth MVR 2,223 from his mobile phone to various other mobile phones at a time when the state was covering his phone expenditures. But an official from the prosecutor general’s office, who wished to remain anonymous, told Haveeru on Sunday that the court had requested his office to resend the documents claiming that they had been destroyed in a coffee spill. The court had so far refused to discuss the matter with the office, the official said. “From what we know, they had asked the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to resend the documents as well. At first they said that it was a tea spill, but they later said that it was a coffee spill,” the official said. A Criminal Court spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. The corruption claims were initially investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) after the Auditor General conducted an audit in to the Judicial Administration Department in 2010. However, the Auditor General's report claimed that judge Hameed had paid the due sum to the state after the issue was raised. The audit into the Judicial Administration Department had revealed more corruption allegations against judge Hameed. The audit claimed that the judge had used the state budget to fix a car that was given to him by the state when it got damaged due to his negligence. The anti-corruption watchdog is currently investigating these allegations, as well as the notorious sex tape of the judge which was leaked last year. The police and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) are conducting separate investigations into the sex tape. Even though the judge has been placed under microscope over numerous criminal allegations, he continues to preside in the Supreme Court's bench. The judicial watchdog has not taken any action against the judge either.
