India has offered me refuge, says ex-President Nasheed
Nasheed on Wednesday took refuge inside the Indian High Commission in Male to avoid arrest after the Hulhumale Magistrate Court on Tuesday ordered the Police to produce the ex-President in court on Wednesday to face charges for the arrest and detention of Chief Criminal Judge Abdulla Mohamed during his tenure as President. The Indian government said it has not decided whether to grant Nasheed refuge at the embassy, according to Associated Press (AP). The hearing was scheduled at 4:00pm on Wednesday but Nasheed had gone inside the High Commission just past noon. The ex-President who remains inside the High Commission said on his twitter page that “India has agreed to give him refuge.” Haveeru has been unable to get an official comment from the Indian High Commission over Nasheed’s tweet. Meanwhile, the Hulhumale Court cancelled Wednesday’s hearing on Nasheed’s trial after Nasheed has sought refuge at the Indian High Commission and did not attend the hearing. Police had earlier informed that Hulhumale Court that it is unable to implement the order issued to produce Nasheed in court as the ex-President was inside the Indian High Commission in Male. As the Indian High Commission is a designated diplomatic area, he cannot be arrested till the time he remains inside the complex. The arrest warrant was issued after Nasheed missed the hearing on last Sunday as Nasheed had not returned to Maldives from his visit to India. Police cordoned off the area outside the High Commission after Nasheed's arrival at noon, as his supporters began to gather in protest against his possible arrest. If found guilty in the court case, Nasheed faces jail time which means he could be barred from contesting in the September 7 presidential election.
